One last thing; cleaning out the ashes is a snap. The ones that looked like the old 1970's grills are also made overseas, and are of poor quality. The day after using the grill, I simply lift out the grate and dump the spent coals in the garden. By the time we are done eating, so are the peanuts.
The replacement burners will last about one season. The original H-burner lasted for about a dozen years before finally giving out. This thing is built like a Sherman tank, and will probably outlast me. I also bought a quick start charcoal chimney.
Another nice point to make is that the Lodge grill fits inside my old gas grill, so I have a way of covering the grill to give my food a little extra smokey flavor. Enter the Lodge Grill (made in the USA). I've used it three times and now know why so many people give it 5 stars. At first, I was a little put off because there were only two heights to have the grilling surface at. I have been using a lava rock gas grill for the past 26 years, but got tired of having to buy a sub-standard Chinese made low quality stainless steel H-burner every year for around 55 dollars.
Within ten minutes of deciding I want to grill dinner, I have my food on the grill. I still miss the convenience of my gas grill, but am perfectly happy with this charcoal grill. Also, it always bothered me to be done cooking and still have a nice bed of coals burning, so I got creative. When the meat is done, I toss on a bunch of raw peanuts (in the shell). You only really need two heights. So, I figured I would go back to our original Hibachi grill. Roasted to perfection, I might add.
But guess what. I only use the highest level, since it works for burgers, steaks, or chicken. You won't be sorry that you bought this grill, especially since it's now well below the $107 that I paid for it. They tend to hold their shape and not drop into the bottom of the firebox.
They say they never got they messages I sent before (I don't know if that is true - I do have the date stamps on my messages), but they gave me the information on how to get a replacement grill grate right away then. It did take me awhile to get into contact with the person I needed to contact regarding this problem. I was pleased with the timely arrival of the grill, unfortunately there was several cracks in the grilling grate. It only took about a week for that to arrive. There was an email address on the packing slip with a great message about who to contact. After a couple of weeks, I went back into the Amazon site and found a way to email the distributer that way, and was able to get ahold of someone right away. Overall other than the hassle I was happy with the purchase. Thanks
After dinner, dump the ashes and it doubles as a 33lb dumbbell for you to work on your biceps with. First thing I did as soon as I got it home was to put it together and prepped for a couple steaks. I really like the ability to get awesome grill marks from the cast iron - the lighter wire grill grates just cant quite get the heat quality that this does. Don't drop it, keep it properly oiled, and your great grand kids will enjoy it after you're gone. Highly recommended.
The Lodge Sportsman's Grill is well designed, well made, strong, and an all around great product. We have done both. This grill is made to take punishment and keep on a cookin. Perhaps even civil war. It is best to be prepared for the worst case with one of these. Combine that with natural disasters and one should have a means of cooking using charcoal or wood should the worst happen. In these times when we have Communists in our White House and they seem to be trying to collapse our economy and to change our nation to a Communist state, we don't know what is going to happen from day to day in our nation. You can put pots and pans or a dutch oven on it and stick in a few medium size sticks, or some charcoal and you can fry, bake, grill, or barbicue.
This grill fits the need. You can burn small pieces of wood or wood chips, or charcoal in it. With our nation in the state it is in where our economy is being purposly destroyed by traitors, you can't count on electricity or any thing else. Keep your powder dry folks hard times have just begun.
I was delighted to have grill #2 arrive sooner than expected (3 days) and have it delivered by UPS. Since I live in Nevada and the shipping origin was Arizona, I expected it to arrive within 4 days tops. I had indicated to Amazon that I was up for giving it one more try; if the third grill arrived damaged, I would be ready for a refund. in July, 2009, reported.
Maybe the shipment they received from Lodge was all defective. Dismayed, I contacted Amazon, explained why FedEx does not work as a shipper where I live (middle of Nevada desert), requested UPS or USPS instead, and was emailed a shipping label to return the grill. Amazon stated they would ship out a replacement grill immediately. After reading all the glowing reviews, I decided to spend the big bucks on what appeared to be the most wonderful little grill. It arrived on exactly the day they projected, cost $20.00 less, and arrived from New York completely intact. I was emailed a label, and made the 90 mile trek to the post office to get the grill back in the mail.
Shortly after I sent that email, Amazon contacted me and stated that since I had received two damaged grills, they would refund my cost since it was likely another grill would arrive damaged. Perhaps they opened a few boxes and examined the grills.
So, if anyone orders this grill from Amazon (shipped from Goodyear, AZ), be sure to check it out carefully when it arrives. I am sad to report that my first grill arrived 5 days later than their projected date (it took 10 days) and upon opening the box, I immediately saw a crack completely through the fire bowl in the lower right bottom (as you look at it)just as Bob P.
I don't know. Delight turned to dismay again as I saw yet another crack in exactly the same place as the previous grill.
Again, I contacted Amazon and sent them a photo showing exactly where and what the crack looked like. What I can tell you is that I decided to take another leap and order the exact same grill from Ace Hardware.
